Thread: How is everyone? |
|

Well, there have been a lot of improvements to Armed Assault. The latest patch now officially introduced the CTI (Capture The Island) mod, a Battlezone-ish mod for Operation Flashpoint/Armed Assault. There are further modifications to it like WACO or SiCTI. If you're interested -> http://flashbang.brainspace.info/forum/index.php

Hey Drag,
playing Armed Assault, Eve Online and MS Flight Simulator X mostly, if I play games at all.
My boss sent me around Germany for the last 2 years so I lived in hotel rooms and out of the suitcase with little 'net connectivity. But right now I'm scheduled for software development (finally!) and can work from home.
I even got me nice appartment, actually the appartment where I spent the first 10 years of my life. It was pretty run down, but with the help of my parents it's almost as good as new. My home office furniture will arrive on Monday, the bedroom is already there, so I'm going to move there officially next Monday.
Internet connectivity is sweet. High-speed cable by Kabel Deutschland. I have two Modems, my private 30MBit down, 2MBit up connection which comes with a national flatrate and the office line (paid by my employer) with 20MBit down, 1MBit up.
Currently I'm pretty much between appartments
Working early to get my 8 hours a day quota, then drive over to my the place and clean up, set up things, configure the network infrastructure etc. Especially the network infrastructure is taking time. I ahve two managed switches with VLAN setups, two cable modems and two routers, one of which is a Linksys WRT54GL1.1 with custom firmware. I need that one for the VPN connection to the office. Took me a whole afternoon to figure out that the Linksys router and the Netgear switches use different VLAN tagging standards... duh.

Thread: Forum move |
|
|
This week work is leaving me a little breathing space, so I will start moving the forum and website to another hosting solution. I'm currently paying for a whole dedicated server which runs just a Teamspeak server, a website and a forum. This is a bit heavy, considering we don't even have a game server running, which was the reason why we got our own dedicated server in the first place.
The new hosting solution is a lot cheaper than the dedicated server now, we still have the website and the forums. We won't have the Teamspeak server, individual webspace and e-mail accounts, although I can install e-mail forwardings like ruddyname@the-rip.com to private@email.net

That would be Operation Flashpoint. You can buy the game here, here,
here or here. Make sure you get the Game Of The Year Edition. It contains the Red Hammer and Resistance add-ons. These official add-ons and the game at patch level 1.96 are required by virtual all available free add-ons.
For starters I recommend you go with the classic mfcti. It's the least complex and challenging. Other mods of the same flavour are CRCTI and WGL. They're more realistic with more challenging AI, more vehicles and more maps. In WGL for example you better forget about going Rambo. Without a mixed team of specialists you won't survive very long.
Especially with the WGL add-on Operation Flashpoint comes very close to Virtual Battlespace 2 which is used for real-world tactical training. Watch the video. Very impressive.
It's not a coincidence both programs look similar. Consider Operation Flashpoint the light version of VBS 2.

Well, there is a game (or rather a mod for a game) that has the command, resource and unit concepts we know from Battlezone. However it doesn't have humans and scions, but Americans and Russians. Units are real-world tanks, APCs, trucks and cars. Instead of capturing resource pools you capture towns. It has a complex sighting and targeting model for AI units which makes using trees, bushes, hills and trenches for camouflage useful. The learning curve is rather steep as in Battlezone, especially since vehicles are painstakingly modelled with the same advantages and flaws as their real-world equivalents. The first two, three hours are rather frustrating, after that the fun starts.

After an arduous year on a new job at the other end of Germany I finally got some good vacation time. All of December!
And this time I'm creating a completely new ~RIP~ website using the latest in PHP template technology and other geeky stuff nobody probably gives a hoot about.

WBB2 = Woltlab Burning Board 2
<pimp>
By the way, you should try the mfCTI mod for Operation Flashpoint -> http://mfcti.sourceforge.net/
It has base building, smart AI and one commander per faction. Very Battlezone-ish.
Each game is unique and highly dynamic, there are no scripted AI paths or behaviour.
I've found half a dozen people who enjoy this mod.

You're welcome. I'm glad I didn't bork the database when I set your password manually.
And while trying to get Juggernaught a password reminder email I fixed two bugs in WBB2. Go me!

For those of you who have Operation Flashpoint: http://mfcti.sourceforge.net/
You need the Resistance Add-on for this.
It's Capture The Island! It's like Battlezone 2, but with Operation Flashpoint assets. Start with a mobile command center, build your base and base defenses, capture towns for income (careful, there is resistence) and eliminate the other team.
I like it!

Slightly corrupted image data /methinks. IE doesn't have a problem with it, but Firefox/Mozilla are rather picky about that.

There we go, one password USB stick equipped and ready
I'm going to give the forum some ruddy colours tonight.
Oh, and @all ruddies signing up again: Please drop me a line here or send me a private message so I can assign you to the proper user groups as quickly as possible. I also can't remember all of the old forum structure, I'd be happy if you could give me some pointers.
I've created a new RIP theme which isn't default just yet because I'm missing images (buttons etc). Unfortunately I forgot them on my PC at home...
If you want to take a look at the RIP design theme you can switch using UserCP/Edit Options/Select Style (at the bottom of the page).

Fedora is a bit tricky if you're new to Linux. If you're looking for a Linux built specifically for beginners you might want to take a look at ubuntu. It's basically a Debian fork augmented by a lot of automatic configuration functionality. In an installation test it outperformed Vista regarding hardware autoconfiguration and total installation time. :-)

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of activity here. I'm currently moving - two times. I've got boxes up to my nose with stuff I've completely forgotten I have.
In two weeks I'm supposed to have moved to Wolfsburg for my new job at Volkswagen, after that I'm sitting in a small appartment I share with a co-worker every evening. That should give me enough time to bring our server up to speed again.
BTW there's a TS2 server running again, but I haven't gotten around to set up any channels. Please register and let me know so I can give you server admin status so you can do there as you see fit.
